What is Henna?
Henna is a dye made from a plant that grows in South Asia and North Africa. The leaves of Lawsonia inermis are dried and crushed into a powder. Henna powder is combined with liquid ingredients to create a paste that can stick to your skin. Henna paste stains the upper layers of your skin with a rich brown color. After two weeks, your stained skin will disappear leaving behind unfreckled cheeks. It’s important to confirm you are using organic henna powder combined with all-natural ingredients. Some companies create different colors by adding chemicals that can be dangerous to your skin. Stick to the brown henna.
The easiest method is to use a henna freckle kit that has everything you need ready to go. The organic henna paste is one we trust and is pre-made to save you the time and the mess. Although the paste is made in small batches when you order, be sure to put the henna cone straight into the fridge (or freezer if you need to store it for a couple days) to help it last longer. When you’re ready to start your fake freckles, let the cone come back to room temperature.
Step 1 – Wash and thoroughly dry your face. Start with a clean canvas. Oil, makeup, or lotion can create a barrier that doesn’t allow the henna to effectively stain.
Step 2 – Apply henna. Make little dots across your nose and cheeks. Try to vary the size and position to make them look as natural as possible. If it makes you feel more comfortable, practice on a piece of paper first to get a feel for how much pressure you need to apply.
Step 3 – Dry and remove. Let the henna paste dry for at least 1 hour. Again, you can vary the dry times to have some darker and some lighter freckles. The dried paste will easily rub off with a paper towel. Make sure to do this part over the sink or outside.
Step 4 – Moisturize. Use the coconut oil from the above kit to stay supple. The more you moisturize and avoid exfoliating, the longer your henna freckles will stay – around two weeks.
Step 5 – Stay dry. For the first few hours, avoid water. Your freckles will continue to darken over the next 24 hours, so you don’t want to wash it off too soon. After the henna reaches full color, you are free to shower and swim as normal.
